Other solid foods for baby

Every baby is unique, so the best time to introduce your baby to solid food can vary widely. However, once he's comfortable eating baby cereals (after six months of age) he may be ready to try a wide variety of solid foods.

Talk with your healthcare professional about introducing other solid foods, and follow these simple steps to introduce them.

Vegetables first...

After you've introduced single-grain baby cereals and your baby is comfortable eating solids, offer him cooked, puréed and unsalted vegetables. Try carrots, squash or sweet potatoes first. Wax beans, green beans and zucchini are also recommended.

Start with two feedings a day of 1 to 3 teaspoons each and gradually increase to 3 to 5 tablespoons daily. Remember, after you've tried one kind of vegetable, wait three to five days before you try feeding him another kind. This delay is important should your baby have an adverse reaction - so you know what food caused the reaction.

...Then fruits

After you've introduced the first vegetables, offer your baby puréed and cooked fruit, or very ripe mashed fruit (such as bananas).

Start with two feedings a day of 1 to 3 teaspoons each and gradually increase to 3 to 5 tablespoons daily. As with vegetables, stick with one kind of fruit for three to five days before you try feeding him another kind.
