Baby's 12th month (milestones)

This is a good time to reflect on just how far your baby has come since her birth. Most babies this age love to express affection, and most have mastered the art of hugging and kissing. She may even be able to give a kiss or hug when asked. (However, while her attachment to you deepens, she's probably still a little wary around strangers.)

Handling any momentary anxiety with calm, confident, loving support can help ease her temporary fears. As she gets older, your consistent, loving responses will help her gain more confidence, until one day soon, she'll begin to greet new people with joy.

Babies can range in weight and size quite widely at 12 months:

  • 10th percentile: 70 cm (about 28 inches) and 8 kg (18 pounds)
  • 90th percentile: 76 cm (about 30 inches) and 11 kg (24 pounds)

This month, your baby may:
  • Develop an attachment to a "comfort object" like a teddy bear or a blanket as she continues to find new ways to soothe herself
  • Explore away from you in a safe environment as her confidence grows
  • Begin to walk more steadily on her own
  • Begin to pick up small crumbs or pieces of food with two fingers
  • Learn how to stack two blocks or scribble on paper
  • Begin to expand beyond her one-syllable vocabulary
  • Begin to imitate animal sounds
  • Continue to search for hidden objects as her understanding of object permanence grows
  • Begin to point to things and look at pictures as her curiosity about her world increases
What you can do

Provide plenty of attention for your 12-month-old. Lavish her with praise for her accomplishments. Provide lots of objects to explore, such as cloth books with zippers and ties.

Continue to help with language skills development by labeling everything verbally. When you're bathing her, name body parts. As you dress her, name the pieces of clothing. As you read, name the objects in the book and when you feed your child, name the food.

common myths

Babies will sleep through the night by three months of age.

Sadly, getting a full eight hours of shut-eye at night will still be but a dream for many of the sleep-deprived moms (and dads) at the three-month mark. Sleeping through the night is actually a developmental process that babies go through. For... more
